Where we go and what we move
Where does Snout Route provide pet transportation services?
Snout Route provides ground pet transport throughout the 48 contiguous U.S. states, Alaska, and all of Canada. There's no fixed route list — every trip is planned point-to-point around your actual pickup and drop-off, including cross-border trips between the U.S. and Canada. We're ground-only, so Hawaii isn't reachable. See the Service Area page.
How does door-to-door pet transportation work?
One dedicated handler picks your pet up at your door and drives them directly to the new address — no cargo holds, no relay handoffs, no hubs. It's a four-step process: book your route, send over any required documents, pickup and transit with the same handler and vehicle the whole way, and doorstep delivery. See the full How it Works page.
What types of pets does Snout Route transport?
We routinely transport dogs, cats, birds, reptiles, rabbits, and other companion animals. For dogs, see our dog transport service; for cats, see our ground cat transportation; for younger dogs and breeder-to-owner trips, see puppy transport. Non-dog/cat trips are confirmed before booking because enclosure, temperature, feeding, legal, and border requirements vary by species. See our small animal transport service for rabbits, pet birds, reptiles, and other qualifying household pets. For moves within Canada or across the U.S.–Canada border, see our Canada pet transport service. Tell us exactly what animal you are moving when you request a quote so we can confirm the trip is appropriate.
Does my pet travel privately or with other animals?
Your pet travels privately with one dedicated handler and vehicle from pickup through delivery. Pets from the same household can travel together, but we do not combine unrelated customers' pets in the same trip or place unfamiliar pets together in the same crate or enclosure. See our Ground Transport page.
Can multiple pets from the same household travel together?
Yes — multiple pets from the same household can travel together in one trip. Pricing accounts for the number of pets, since more animals need more space and planning, but they travel in the same vehicle with the same handler. Get a free quote: Get a Quote.
Can you transport a pet between the United States and Canada?
Yes — cross-border ground transport in either direction, with customs paperwork like the CDC Dog Import Form handled on your behalf. Exactly what's required depends on your pet's age and direction of travel — health certificates are arranged by the pet owner's own vet. Read the Border Requirements page.
What it costs and what affects it
How much does professional pet transportation cost?
Local & Regional starts at $299, Cross-Country starts at $899, and Cross-Border is a custom quote. Pricing is mileage-based, not a flat rate — distance, pet size and number, season, and timing all factor in. See the full Pricing page.
What factors affect the cost of transporting a pet?
Five main factors: distance & route complexity, pet size & number of pets, seasonal demand, expedited timing, and tolls. Longer or multi-stop routes cost more per mile, larger or multiple pets need more space and planning, summer/holiday weeks run at a premium, and pickup within 48 hours carries a rush surcharge. Tolls are billed separately after the trip. See the full Pricing page.
How can I get an accurate pet transport quote?
Fill out the quote form with your pickup, drop-off, and pet's needs — you'll get a real quote back within one business day. No bots, no bidding sites — one quote, one price. Get a free quote: Get a Quote.
Are there additional charges for multiple pets, special care, or remote locations?
Your written quote shows any added charge for multiple pets, special-care needs, remote or multi-stop routing, or rush pickup before you book. Tolls are not included in the quoted trip price and are billed separately after the trip. See our Pricing page.
What is your cancellation or rescheduling policy?
Cancellation and rescheduling terms are provided with your booking terms before payment. If a cancellation occurs close to pickup, any nonrefundable amount or rescheduling charge is determined by those written booking terms, not by an unpublished fee. Contact us as soon as a date changes so we can review the options tied to your reservation.
How to reserve your pet's trip
How far in advance should I book pet transportation?
For cross-country or cross-border trips, request a quote at least 1–2 weeks ahead when possible. Local trips may be available within 48 hours. If you need pickup within 48 hours, any rush charge will be shown in your quote before you book.
Can I book last-minute pet transportation?
Last-minute pickup may be available, especially on local routes. For pickup within 48 hours, any rush charge will be shown in your quote before you book. Cross-country and cross-border trips generally need more lead time because routing and document requirements can limit availability.
Who's driving, and how your pet is protected
Is ground transportation safe for dogs, cats, and other pets?
Every trip uses a climate-controlled vehicle, a dedicated handler, and secured crating or vehicle restraints appropriate to the pet and travel setup. We do not use relay handoffs between unrelated handlers. See the Ground Transport page, our dog transport page, cat transport service, or puppy transport for species-specific details.
Are Snout Route drivers USDA licensed?
Not licensed — registered. For commercial animal transporters, USDA APHIS uses registration rather than the dealer/exhibitor licensing categories. APHIS states that motor carriers and other businesses that take custody of regulated animals and transport them for hire are regulated under the Animal Welfare Act and must register. Snout Route is USDA-registered.

Are your pet transport drivers trained in animal first aid?
Yes — every handler completes pet first-aid and handling training before working solo. Handlers are also background-checked and bonded, and carry a minimum of two years of professional driving experience. See the Ground Transport page.
Are your pet transport vehicles climate-controlled?
Yes. Vehicles used for trips are climate-controlled and temperature is monitored during transport. Vehicle safety, climate control, cleanliness, and pet-restraint setup are checked as part of trip preparation and routine maintenance. See the Ground Transport page.
What happens if my pet becomes sick or injured during transport?
If your pet shows signs of illness or injury, the handler will assess the situation, contact you or your designated emergency contact, and seek veterinary care when needed. In an urgent situation, getting your pet appropriate veterinary attention takes priority over staying on schedule. We'll keep you informed throughout the process.
How does Snout Route handle weather, traffic, or travel delays?
Safety comes before the schedule. Severe weather, road closures, traffic, or unsafe driving conditions may require us to slow down, reroute, or stop temporarily. If a delay changes your expected arrival time, we'll let you know with a revised estimate. We would rather arrive safely a little later than take an unnecessary risk.
Day-to-day care during the trip
How often will my dog receive walks and bathroom breaks?
Dogs receive regular bathroom, water, and exercise breaks throughout the trip. On most routes we plan a stop about every three to four hours while driving, then adjust the schedule for puppies, senior dogs, medical needs, weather, and your dog's normal routine.
Can your drivers give my pet medication during transport?
Handlers can administer routine medication that we have agreed to handle at booking and that can be given safely according to written instructions. Tell us in advance about injections, refrigeration, controlled substances, dose changes, or anything requiring veterinary judgment so we can confirm whether the trip can accommodate it. Medication administration is logged with trip check-ins.
Can you care for senior pets or pets with medical needs?
Many senior pets and pets with manageable medical needs can travel with us. Tell us about medications, mobility limitations, recent illness or surgery, medical conditions, and special routines when requesting your quote. We will tell you before booking whether we can accept the trip and whether written veterinary clearance is needed for that pet.
Staying in the loop while your pet travels
Will I receive updates while my pet is being transported?
Yes — regular trip updates and photo check-ins are on every single trip, not a premium add-on. Your handler shares updates directly with you for the whole route. Get a free quote: Get a Quote.
What's required, and whose job it is
Does my pet need a veterinary health certificate for ground transportation?
Check the destination on our State Requirements page. Some states require a CVI for ordinary dog/cat entry and others provide exemptions based on age, ownership, or purpose of travel. NWS emergency orders can also create shorter certificate windows for certain origins. For U.S.–Canada trips, use our Border Requirements page. Your veterinarian should issue any required certificate within the exact timeframe shown for the route.

Getting ready before pickup day
How should I prepare my pet for a long-distance ground trip?
Schedule a veterinary checkup before departure so you can confirm that your pet is healthy enough to travel and meets the requirements for the destination. USDA APHIS notes that receiving states may require health certificates, vaccinations, testing, or treatments. Keep your pet’s normal food and routine as consistent as practical, pack medications and records, use a secure leash/harness or carrier, and provide written feeding, medication, behavior, and emergency-contact information for the handler.

Special cases
How old must a puppy or kitten be before it can be transported?
Snout Route generally requires puppies and kittens to be at least 8 weeks old and fully weaned before commercial transportation. USDA guidance states that dogs and cats must be at least 8 weeks old and fully weaned before regulated travel. Cross-border rules can require an animal to be older; for example, CDC requires dogs entering the United States to be at least 6 months old.

Are there any pet breeds, sizes, ages, or medical conditions you cannot transport?
We don't automatically exclude a pet simply because of breed or size. Each trip is evaluated individually. However, an animal that is seriously ill, injured, in significant distress, or medically unstable may not be safe to transport except when the trip is specifically for veterinary care. Special requirements may also apply based on age, species, destination, or border regulations.
The handoff on both ends
Do I need to be present when my pet is picked up?
Not necessarily. The owner or another authorized adult can release the pet to the handler. We need to know who will be present ahead of time, and that person must have the pet, travel supplies, medications, and required documents ready for the handoff.
Overseas travel questions, answered
Snout Route provides ground pet transportation and does not arrange overseas air shipping. These answers help customers coordinating the ground portion of an international relocation. Requirements can change, so verify them with the appropriate government authority before travel.
Do you transport pets overseas?
No. Snout Route provides ground pet transportation in the United States and Canada and does not arrange overseas air cargo or international flights. We may be able to provide the ground portion of an international relocation, such as transport to or from an airport, veterinarian, border crossing, or agreed handoff point.

What documents are usually required to take a pet to another country?
The destination country sets its own requirements. Depending on the country and animal, these may include an international health certificate, microchip, vaccinations, testing, parasite treatments, permits, or other documents. Many countries require a health certificate; when USDA endorsement is required, it must be issued by a USDA-accredited veterinarian. Start early because the process can take weeks or months.

Can Snout Route take my pet to an airport for an international flight?
Potentially, yes. Snout Route does not arrange the international flight, but we may be able to provide ground transportation to or from an airport or another agreed handoff point. The owner should separately confirm airline, destination-country, crate, health-document, and check-in requirements.

What happens when a dog returns to the United States after international travel?
Dogs returning to the United States are subject to CDC dog-import requirements, including U.S.-origin dogs. A CDC Dog Import Form receipt is required for each dog entering the U.S. Dogs that have been in a high-risk country during the previous six months need additional documentation. Certain U.S.-vaccinated dogs traveling to high-risk countries need rabies certification completed before leaving the United States.

Are international pet-travel requirements the same as traveling between the U.S. and Canada?
No. Crossing the U.S.–Canada border is international travel, but the requirements differ from overseas travel. Canada requires applicable import paperwork at the border, and dogs entering or returning to the United States from Canada must also meet CDC entry requirements.
